Omer Yurtseven (2019-2020)

In his only year with the Georgetown Hoyas, Omer Yurtseven made an immediate impact.

Yurtseven grew up in Turkey, where his size and agility made him a rapidly rising star in that nation, playing in three European championships before the age of 18. As a 17 year old, he set a national record by scoring an incredible 91 points and 28 rebounds in an under-18 game. Yurtseven split time between high school studies and the Turkish pro team, Fenerbahce, and once appeared in an NBA exhibition game between Fenerbahce and the Brooklyn Nets, scoring eight points and seven rebounds in 15 minutes of play. At the time, he was the youngest player ever to appear in an NBA exhibition game.

Yurtseven saw further opportunities awaiting in the Uniterd States. Ranked #73 in the class of 2016, he was recruited by Syracuse and Utah before signing with North Carolina State in 2017.

Yurtseven's brief appearances with Fenerbahce was not well received by the NCAA, who suspended Yurtseven for the first nine games of the 2016-17 season as a penalty for his professional play. As a freshman at N.C. State, he averaged 5.9 points and 4.4 rebounds in 22 games, but was more proficient as a sophomore, earning third team all-ACC honors with 13.5 points and 6.7 rebounds, and a impressive 50 % mark (22 of 44) from the three point line. Following a coaching change at NC State, he opted to transfer to Gerogetown, sitting out the 2018-19 season.

With a 20 point, 12 rebound effort in the 2019-20 season opener, Georgetown fans quickly saw his potential. Yurtseven was largely untouchable in the non-conference portion of the schedule, averaging 18.3 points and 10.3 rebounds with a season high of 32 points and 17 rebounds versus Samford. During Big East play, Yurtseven was sixth in the conference in scoring average and third in rebounds, with a high of 22 points and 11 rebounds versus Marquette. For the most part, Yurtseven stayed close to the basket in Patrick Ewing's offense--he shot just 3 for 14 from outside compared to his numbers at N.C. State. He led the Hoyas in scoring and rebounding for the 2019-20 season.

Following an ankle injury suffered in the second half of Georgetown's Feb. 8 game with DePaul, Yurtseven missed six consecutive games, to which Georgetown lost all six. He returned to action in Gerogetown's loss to St. John's in the 2020 Big East Tournament, but was tentative and scored just eight points in 21 minutes of action.

Yurtseven opted not to pursue a redshirt season in 2020 and played in the NBA G League before being called up to the Miami Heat in 2021.
